The mirror and the Savior

Start with a question.

“Have you ever had something on your face—like toothpaste or spaghetti sauce—and no one told you?”

03 · OPEN THE BIBLE

Toothpaste on your chin.

Imagine walking into school with a big blob of toothpaste on your chin. You have no idea it’s there. Then you pass a mirror in the hallway—yikes! Now you know. The mirror didn’t put the toothpaste there. It just showed you the truth.

But here’s the thing: you can’t clean your face with the mirror. Try rubbing a mirror on your chin. It won’t help! A mirror can show you the problem, but it can’t fix it. For that, you need water and a washcloth.

God’s law works like a mirror. Our Bible verse says the law brings awareness of sin. When we look at God’s commandments, we see two things clearly. First, we see what God is like—holy, good, true, and loving—and what he wants for us. Second, we see what we are like: people who don’t love God and others the way we should.

That’s why Paul says no one becomes right with God by keeping the law. Trying to fix our sin by following the rules harder is like trying to wash your face with a mirror. God’s law is good. It just can’t make us clean.

So what does the law do? It points us to someone who can. When we see how holy God is and how far we fall short, we realize we need a Savior. A Savior is someone who rescues you when you can’t rescue yourself. That’s Jesus. He is the one who washes us clean—not just a little, but all the way.

Seeing your sin can feel like a big uh-oh. Don’t look away from the mirror. Let it send you running to Jesus. He isn’t surprised by what you see, and he is ready to make you clean.

06 · TALK TO GOD

Let’s pray.

Holy God, thank you for your good law. It shows us how holy and good you are, and it shows us our sin. We can’t make ourselves clean, but you sent Jesus to be our Savior. Help us not to hide from the truth about ourselves. Help us run to Jesus every time we see how much we need him. Amen.

Then invite everyone to add one thing they want to tell God.

07 · MAKE IT STICK

A little truth to learn by heart.

Break the answer into three parts with motions. Point up for what the law shows us about God, point to your heart for what it shows about us, and reach out both hands for our need of a Savior. Say it in parts first, then all together.
