A baby called Mighty God

01 · GATHER ROUND

Start with a question.

“Have you ever held a tiny baby? What did you notice about them?”

Tiny fingers, sleepy yawns, that new-baby smell—let kids share. Then imagine that baby is also God.

03 · OPEN THE BIBLE

Tiny fingers, mighty God.

Newborn babies are so small. Their fingers can barely wrap around yours. They can’t hold up their own heads. They cry when they’re hungry and sleep most of the day. Everything about a baby says, “I need someone to take care of me.”

Now listen to our Bible verse. Remember Isaiah, the prophet who lived hundreds of years before Jesus? God gave him another promise: a child would be born and a son would be given, and he would be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Wait—a baby called Mighty God? How can someone be tiny and mighty at the same time? (And “Everlasting Father” doesn’t mean Jesus is God the Father. It means he cares for his people forever, the way a good father does.)

Here is the amazing truth about Jesus. He is truly God. He has always existed, he made the world, and he has all of God’s power. And he is truly human. He was born as a baby in Bethlehem. He got hungry and tired. He learned to walk and talk. He had friends, and he cried when a friend died. He wasn’t pretending to be human. He really was.

Why does our Redeemer need to be both? Think about a bridge across a deep canyon. To work, it has to reach all the way to both sides. If it touches only one side, nobody can cross. Jesus is God, so he reaches all the way to God. Jesus is human, so he reaches all the way to us.

No angel could do this. No ordinary person could do this. Only Jesus—God who became a man without ever stopping being God—can bring us back. Christians celebrate this at Christmas, but it’s true every day of the year.

The next time you see a baby, remember: the Mighty God once had tiny fingers, too. He came that close because he loves us that much.

06 · TALK TO GOD

Let’s pray.

Lord Jesus, you are the Mighty God, and you became a tiny baby for us. Thank you for coming so close. Thank you that you know what it’s like to be hungry, tired, and sad, and that you have all of God’s power to save. Help us trust you as our Wonderful Counselor and Prince of Peace. Amen.

Then invite everyone to add one thing they want to tell God.

07 · MAKE IT STICK

A little truth to learn by heart.

Two motions tell the story. Cradle your arms as if you’re holding a baby when you say “truly human,” and stretch your arms up high and wide when you say “truly God.” Say the answer back and forth—rock, reach, rock, reach—and see who can go fastest without mixing them up.
