Death couldn’t hold on

Start with a question.

“Have you ever played a claw machine? Why is it so hard to win?”

Everyone has a claw-machine story—usually a sad one. It’s a perfect picture for today.

03 · OPEN THE BIBLE

The claw that couldn’t grip.

You drop in your coin, steer the claw over the fluffiest stuffed animal, and press the button. The claw drops, closes around the prize, and starts to lift… and then it slips. The prize tumbles back into the pile. The claw just couldn’t keep its grip.

Peter uses a picture a little like that. He’s preaching about Jesus, who had been crucified. He says God raised Jesus from the dead, because it was impossible for death to keep him in its grip. Death grabbed Jesus—he really died—but death couldn’t hold on.

Why not? Because Jesus isn’t only human. He is also truly God, and God is the source of all life. When Jesus died for our sins, death tried to hold him the way it holds everyone else. But on the third day, Jesus walked out of the tomb alive.

Because Jesus is God, everything he did for us is perfect and effective. Perfect means nothing was missing or wrong. Effective means it actually works—like medicine that truly cures. If Jesus were only a good man, his death might have been brave, but it couldn’t save anyone. Because he is God, his obedience and his sacrifice are powerful enough to pay for the sins of everyone who trusts him.

Think of it this way: a cup of water can’t put out a forest fire, but a whole ocean could. The sin of the world is huge, and only someone infinitely great could take it all away. Jesus is that great, because he is God.

Ever wonder whether Jesus can really forgive you? Remember the claw that couldn’t grip. Death couldn’t hold Jesus, and your sin can’t outweigh what he has done. He is strong enough to save.

06 · TALK TO GOD

Let’s pray.

Lord Jesus, you are God, and death could not keep its grip on you. Thank you that your life, your death, and your rising again are perfect and powerful enough to save us. When we wonder if our sin is too big, remind us that you are bigger. We worship you as our Savior and our God. Amen.

A little truth to learn by heart.

Make a tight fist as you begin the answer, as if you’re gripping something hard. As you say the words about Jesus’s obedience and suffering, slowly open your hand—death couldn’t hold on. Shout the last part together. Repeat until everyone knows it.
