Start with a question.

“Have you ever learned to float in water? What was the hardest part?”

Most swimmers say the hardest part is relaxing. Hold on to that—it’s today’s big idea.

03 · OPEN THE BIBLE

Learning to float.

When you first learn to float, your body wants to fight the water. You kick and paddle and stiffen up—and you sink. Then your swim teacher puts a hand under your back and says, “Relax. Lean back. Let the water hold you.” It feels backward. But when you finally stop struggling, the water holds you up.

Faith in Jesus is a lot like that. It isn’t trying harder to hold yourself up. It’s trusting Jesus to hold you. Two words help describe it: receiving and resting. We receive Jesus as the gift God offers, and we rest on him, leaning our whole weight on him to save us.

Notice the word alone in this week’s answer. We don’t rest partly on Jesus and partly on our good behavior, like standing with one foot on the dock and one foot in a boat. That’s a good way to end up in the lake! Faith leans all the way on Jesus.

Paul describes faith in our Bible verse. He says, “I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.” Paul means his old way of trying to make himself right with God is over. Now Jesus is his life. He lives by faith in the Son of God, who loved him and gave himself up for him. Faith is personal. It isn’t only believing facts about Jesus. It’s trusting the Jesus who loves you.

Where do we meet this Jesus? In the gospel—the good news that Jesus lived, died, and rose again to rescue sinners. In that good news, it’s as if God says, “Here is Jesus. Lean back—he’ll hold you.” Faith is letting him.

Sometimes your faith will feel strong, and sometimes it will feel wobbly. That’s okay. The water doesn’t hold you up because you’re a great floater. It holds you up because it’s water. Jesus saves us not because our faith is perfect, but because he is.

06 · TALK TO GOD

Let’s pray.

Lord Jesus, thank you that you loved us and gave yourself for us. We want to rest our whole weight on you. Forgive us for trying to hold ourselves up by being good enough. When our faith feels small or wobbly, remind us that you are strong. Thank you for holding us. Amen.

07 · MAKE IT STICK

A little truth to learn by heart.

Two motions: hold out cupped hands when you get to receiving, then lean back into a chair—or a grown-up’s arms—when you get to resting. Say the answer with both motions, and make the last time a big, relaxed flop onto the couch.
