Start with a question.

03 · OPEN THE BIBLE

The gavel and the doorframe.

Two big words this week. Let’s start with a courtroom. Imagine a judge holding a wooden gavel. A person stands before her, and everyone waits. Then—bang!—the gavel comes down. “Not guilty.” In one moment, everything changes. That person walks out free.

Justification is a courtroom word. It means God declares us righteous—right with him. When we trust Jesus, God says “not guilty”—not because we never did wrong, but because Jesus already took our punishment. Then he says even more: “righteous,” because Jesus’s perfect life is counted as ours. It happens all at once, and it never has to be done again.

Now picture a doorframe with pencil marks, one for each birthday. You didn’t grow all at once. You grew slowly—so slowly you couldn’t see it happening. But look back over the years, and the marks keep climbing.

Sanctification is like that. To sanctify means to make holy. It’s God’s work of making us more and more like Jesus over our whole lives. It’s gradual. Some days you’ll feel like you aren’t growing at all. But God’s Spirit keeps working, helping us love more, trust more, and turn from sin a little more each year. God isn’t in a hurry, and he isn’t disappointed that you’re still growing.

Our Bible verses show God at work from start to finish. Peter writes to people chosen by God the Father, sanctified—made holy—by the Spirit, and sprinkled by Jesus’s blood, a Bible picture of being washed clean. God does the choosing, God does the declaring, and God does the growing. We get to join in—praying, reading his Word, obeying—but the power comes from him.

Here’s why the order matters: God doesn’t wait until you’ve grown enough to declare you righteous. He declares you righteous first, and then he grows you. You don’t grow in order to be accepted. You grow because you already are.

06 · TALK TO GOD

Let’s pray.

Holy God, thank you that when we trust Jesus, you declare us righteous once and for all. Thank you that your Spirit keeps growing us to be more like Jesus. When we feel like we aren’t growing, remind us that you are patient and that you always finish what you start. Make us more like Jesus every day. Amen.

07 · MAKE IT STICK

A little truth to learn by heart.

Tap your fist on your palm like a judge’s gavel for justification, then slowly raise one hand from your knees to high over your head for sanctification. Say the answer with both motions, and see who can make the growing part the slowest.
