Start with a question.

“Instructions: read them first, or dive right in? Who in this family is which?”

Leftover screws and wobbly shelves make great stories. Grown-ups probably have the best ones.

03 · OPEN THE BIBLE

Aunt Rosa opened the giant box, dumped out the boards and screws, and tossed the instructions aside. “I don’t need these,” she said. Two hours later, the bookshelf leaned like a tired flamingo, and six screws were left over. So she picked up the instructions, read them carefully, and started again. This time, the shelf stood straight and strong.

Paul tells Timothy that all Scripture is God-breathed. That means the Bible isn’t something people dreamed up on their own. God himself breathed out these words through the people who wrote them. And it’s useful—for teaching us, correcting us, and training us to live well.

So how should we read something that important—or listen when it’s read out loud at church or at home, like right now? This week’s answer gives three ways. With diligence, which means working at it faithfully, not just once in a while. With preparation—getting our hearts ready, finding a quiet spot, and paying attention. And with prayer, asking God to help us understand and believe.

But reading isn’t the finish line. The goal is to trust God’s Word and practice it in our lives. Jesus told a story about two builders. One built his house on sand, and the other built on rock. Both heard Jesus’s words, but only the one who put them into practice had a house that stood when the storm came.

Imagine reading the bookshelf instructions carefully and then never building the shelf. That would be silly! In the same way, God doesn’t want us to read the Bible just to know things. He wants his Word to change how we live—how we talk, forgive, share, and trust him.

You don’t have to read huge chunks or understand everything at once. Start small. Read a little, pray, and ask, “What does this show me about God? What does he want me to do?” Little by little, God’s Word will make you strong.

06 · TALK TO GOD

Let’s pray.

Father, thank you for breathing out your Word so we could know you. Help us read it with care, prepare our hearts to listen, and ask for your help every time. Give us faith to believe what you say and courage to do it. Build our lives on your Word, like a house on solid rock. Amen.

Then invite everyone to add one thing they want to tell God.

07 · MAKE IT STICK

A little truth to learn by heart.

Pat your knees and clap in a steady beat—pat, pat, clap—and say the answer to the rhythm. Once you have it, speed up the beat, then slow it way down. Keep the rhythm going while each person says one part.
