Start with a question.

“What do you own that has your name on it—a backpack tag, a water bottle, a lunchbox? Why do people put names on things?”

Names say “this belongs to someone.” Let kids find a labeled thing and show it off.

03 · OPEN THE BIBLE

A name on every shirt.

The night before Ada left for summer camp, her mom ironed a little name label into every shirt, sock, and swimsuit: ADA OKAFOR. At camp, things got muddy, mixed up, and tossed into giant laundry piles. But every time, Ada’s clothes found their way back to her. The label said, “This belongs to Ada.”

Before Jesus went back to heaven, he gave his followers a big job. Matthew wrote down his words: go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Ever since, Christians everywhere have baptized people, just as Jesus said.

Baptism is a washing with water. Water makes things clean, so baptism is a picture of being washed clean from sin. But the most important part is the name. People are baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—the name of the one true God. It’s like being given a family name. Baptism says, “This person belongs to God.”

Did you notice that Jesus said the name, not the names? One name covers all three persons. That’s the Trinity again: one God in three persons. Baptism marks us with the name of the whole God—Father, Son, and Spirit.

Baptism is also a beginning, not a finish line. After it comes a whole life of following Jesus, learning from him, and growing with his people. A name label doesn’t make you a great camper, but it shows whose you are—and then the adventure begins. In the same way, baptized Christians keep learning, growing, and trusting Jesus all their lives.

Whether you’ve been baptized or not yet, God’s invitation is the same: come to Jesus. And if you have been baptized, you can remember it on hard days. God has put his name on you.

06 · TALK TO GOD

Let’s pray.

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, thank you for making us your own. Thank you for baptism, which shows that you wash us clean and put your name on your people. Help us live like people who belong to you. When we feel unsure or afraid, remind us whose name we carry. Amen.

Then invite everyone to add one thing they want to tell God.

07 · MAKE IT STICK

A little truth to learn by heart.

As you say the end of the answer, trace three water drops in the air—one for the Father, one for the Son, and one for the Holy Spirit. Then draw one big circle around all three for the one name of God. Say it together until the motions and words flow.
