Seatbelts, crosswalks, and “no running by the pool” are all fair game. Rules can be a way of love.

03 · OPEN THE BIBLE

Between the flags.

Imagine you’re splashing in the ocean when a big wave knocks you over. You tumble and can’t tell which way is up. Then strong arms scoop you out of the water and carry you to shore. It’s the lifeguard. As you catch your breath, she smiles and says, “Stay between the flags, okay? That’s where I can see you.”

Did you stay between the flags so the lifeguard would rescue you? No—she already did! Now her rule is a gift. It shows you how to stay safe and enjoy the beach with people who care about you.

That’s how the Ten Commandments begin. God’s people had been slaves in Egypt for hundreds of years. God rescued them with amazing power and led them through the sea on dry ground. Then, at a mountain called Sinai, he spoke to them. Before he gave a single command, he reminded them: I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of slavery. Rescue first. Commandments second.

The first commandment is our Bible verse: “You shall have no other gods before Me.” The others follow: don’t make idols, honor God’s name, keep a day of rest, honor your parents, don’t murder, be faithful in marriage, don’t steal, don’t lie about others, and don’t long for what belongs to someone else. The first few are about loving God. The rest are about loving people.

God’s commandments aren’t a ladder we climb to reach him. They’re a picture of what life with him looks like—a life of love, honesty, and trust. They also show us where we fall short, which is part of why we need Jesus. He kept every one of these commandments perfectly, and he did it for us.

So when you learn the Ten Commandments, remember the beach. God comes to rescue his people. His commandments are like the lifeguard’s flags—not a way to earn his love, but a way to live well inside it.

04 · WONDER TOGETHER

1. Why do you think God reminded his people how he rescued them before giving any commandments?
2. Which of the Ten Commandments do you think is hardest to keep? Why?
3. The lifeguard’s flags were a gift, not a punishment. Which of God’s commands feels most like a gift to you?

Try answering one yourself first. “I don’t know yet” is a fine place to start a conversation.

06 · TALK TO GOD

Let’s pray.

God of rescue, thank you that you saved your people before you gave them your commandments. Thank you that Jesus came to rescue us, too. Help us love your ways, because they show us how to love you and love others. When we break them, help us run back to you for forgiveness. Teach us to live well inside your love. Amen.

Then invite everyone to add one thing they want to tell God.

07 · MAKE IT STICK

A little truth to learn by heart.

Use the stairs! Start at the bottom and climb one step for each commandment as you say it. No stairs? Take ten giant steps across the room instead. Once you’ve got it, walk back down one step at a time and say them in reverse—ten to one!
