Who do you belong to?

01 · GATHER ROUND

Start with a question.

“What’s something you own that you would be REALLY upset to lose? A LEGO creation? A favorite stuffed animal? What do you do to take care of it?”

Let everyone answer. There’s no rush—and no wrong favorite thing.

03 · OPEN THE BIBLE

You’re with me.

Picture your favorite thing. Maybe you know exactly where it lives. Maybe you carry it everywhere. You care about it because it belongs to you. Here’s something even better: God cares for his children far more than we could ever care for our favorite things.

Imagine walking into a brand-new club. You don’t know anyone. Your stomach does that funny flip. Then you hear a familiar voice: “Hey! You’re with me.” The room is still new, but now you know you’re not on your own. Belonging changes things.

When Christians say, “We belong to God,” we mean more than “God made us.” Jesus came to rescue us from sin—the way we turn away from God and put ourselves first. He died and rose again so that everyone who trusts him can be forgiven and welcomed into God’s family. We don’t earn our place by being the smartest, the bravest, or even the best behaved.

That’s why our question uses the word hope. This isn’t “I hope we have pizza tonight!” hope. It’s something solid to depend on: Jesus and his promise. A hard day can’t make him stop loving his people. Neither can a scary night. Romans tells us that even death cannot make us stop belonging to the Lord.

Does that mean nothing sad will happen? No. We still get sick, miss people, and feel afraid. We can tell God the truth about all of it. We can ask a trusted grown-up for help, too. Belonging to God means we never have to carry those things alone.

And belonging changes how we live. If I belong to Jesus, my words, my time, and even my turn with the controller matter to him. We can love others because he loved us first. So when this week feels big, try saying something small and true: “I belong to God.”

1. What’s the difference between hoping for pizza and putting your hope in Jesus?
2. When might you need to remember that you belong to God this week?
3. If your words and your time belong to God, how could you use them to care for someone tomorrow?

Try answering one yourself first. “I don’t know yet” is a fine place to start a conversation.

06 · TALK TO GOD

Let’s pray.

Father, thank you that we can belong to you through Jesus. When we feel worried or left out, help us remember your love. Forgive us for living as if only we matter. Help us trust you and use our words and actions to love others. Thank you that you hold your children in life and in death. Amen.

Then invite everyone to add one thing they want to tell God.

07 · MAKE IT STICK

A little truth to learn by heart.

Try a call-and-response: a grown-up asks the question, and everyone answers together. Next time, swap roles! Say the answer at breakfast three times this week. For an extra challenge, learn the last part of Romans 14:8.
