Who made the very first thing?

01 · GATHER ROUND

Start with a question.

“If you could invent a brand-new animal, what would it look like? What would it eat, and what sound would it make?”

Enjoy the silly answers. Notice that every inventor in the room still had to use things that already exist—that’s where we’re headed.

03 · OPEN THE BIBLE

Nothing to build with.

Think about the last thing you built. Maybe a blanket fort, a LEGO spaceship, or a wobbly tower of couch cushions. It was all yours! But you didn’t make the blankets, the bricks, or the cushions. You took things that already existed and put them together in a new way. That’s what every builder, artist, and inventor does.

God is different. Before there was a single blanket, brick, or grain of sand, there was only God. He didn’t need supplies. He spoke, and light, oceans, mountains, and giraffes came to be. The Bible calls him the Creator. Every star you can see and every person you will ever meet was his idea.

That means God isn’t just a really big, really strong person. Everything else in the universe was made. God wasn’t. He has always been, and he always will be. In Psalm 86, King David says there is no one like God and nothing like the things he does. You could search every galaxy and never find his equal.

And David doesn’t stop at “God is great.” He goes on to say that God is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and full of loving devotion. The one who made the whole universe is also kind. He is patient when we mess up. He never gets bored of the people he made.

Because God made everyone, every person you meet matters to him—the kid who sits alone at lunch, the neighbor who waves, the baby cousin who cries all through dinner. And because God made everything, nothing is too big or too strange for him. Not the ocean. Not your worries. Not the dark.

So the next time you build something, remember: you’re borrowing from the greatest Maker there is. And he didn’t make the world and then walk away. He is still here, still good, and still paying attention to everything he made—including you.

04 · WONDER TOGETHER

3. If God made every person, how could that change the way you treat someone who annoys you?

Try answering one yourself first. “I don’t know yet” is a fine place to start a conversation.

06 · TALK TO GOD

Let’s pray.

God our Maker, there is no one like you. You made the stars and the sparrows, the oceans and every person we know. Thank you that you are not only powerful but also kind, patient, and full of love. When we feel small, help us remember how big and good you are. Help us treat every person as someone you made on purpose. Amen.
